i've been around - just lurking.

Mar. 21st, 2009 | 01:34 pm

+i booked a trip home, 12 more sleeps till i fly, then 6 sleeps in cottage country!
- work has been a shit show since before xmas. twice as much work really saps your mental energy.
+ i got a $.50 raise. i now make the most money i've ever made in my life.
- no visit to ottawa on this trip.
+still planning a trip home, hopefully for canada day in ottawa.
+opened an etsy shop today. finally. i've been putting it off for YEARS.
+ having a "business lunch" with a prospective "business partner" this afternoon.
+ getting excited about the farmers market again this summer.
+ i have pink and black hair, only i don't look like a bar star.
+ planning to spend the rest of  my afternoon (after lunch) building a light box and getting stuff listed in my new etsy shop
- it is HARD being married.
+ it is AWESOME being married.

and that's pretty much what's going on with me, AND how i feel about it.

ch-ch-checking in!

Nov. 18th, 2008 | 06:27 am
location: home, so far
music: some bouncy little ditty on the mighty CKUA

have i mentioned here that we're planning on moving to banff next summer? probably not. i hardly mention ANYthing.

in sort of unrelated news, we're heading to banff for the day ANY MINUTE NOW. q's going snowboarding, i'm going shopping and eating and crocheting and people-watching in town.

mostly, i really don't like living in alberta, but being a less-than-3-hour drive from the mountains and having jobs that sometimes give us spontaneous, mid-week days off in the mountains can really take the edge off the homesickness.

in fact, here's a little list of things that make alberta Not So Bad:

1. being less than 3 hrs from the MOUNTAINS.
2. there is a seriously HUGE sky here. they don't call it "big sky country" for nothing, though i can't figure out the "wild rose" thing.
3. i found my soulmate, and he loves me back.
4. CKUA public radio. www.ckua.com go check it out - you can listen online! if you don't love it too, i'll give you your money back.
5. my job, i guess. my highest-paying gig of LIFE (so far, i hope), super lax hours, good (great, sometimes) co-workers. plus, i've been there over a year now, and in a few short months, it'll not only be my higest paying, but my longest running job ever.

that'll do for now. quite enough thinking and typing pre-seven-in-the-morning.

have i mentioned here that i'm in the huge process of re-vamping my style? basically, all that really means is that i'm likely going to look like crap until i settle in to something new. i figure once a DECADE is good for a makeover..

on that note, omg my hair is GONE!

i just switched to a "plus account" for about 3 seconds. all because i wanted to share this picture with y'all that made me laugh, FOR REAL, out loud. not just "lol".

when i went to my own lj with my shiny new "plus account", there was suddenly a garish and exclamation-ful banner ad at the top of my entirely black and grey page (i've been thinking of changing that back to orange or pink, but that is beside the point.). i've spent my ENTIRE night (like, the last 6 hours) reading shapely prose (which is written by the cuss-a-licious kate harding), the rotund (you may remember marianne from etsy, craftster, random brief mentions here in my lj, or from her OWN lj - she's onceupon), junk food science, ET CETERA, and the ad that popped up IN MY JOURNAL was a "DIET! LOSE WEIGHT! FEEL BETTER!" load of crap.

in short, it rubbed me the wrong way at the wrong time. convenience be damned, i'll find another way (that isn't a link) to show you the thing that made me laugh. because who doesn't need a good laugh?

also, (this needs caps):

HUGE MAD PROPS TO KATE AND MARIANNE, WHO ARE CHANGING THE WORLD. thank you.

***********

i printed and cut these out and podgied them to the front of the sketch book i got for my birthday, just to remind me. i'm thinking about doing a bit of journalling tonight, and maybe a bit of yoga..

have i said what i got for my birthday?
q's mom gave me 2 16x20 inch canvases
q took me to the art store, and we sunk $70 on supplies: sculpey, a carving tool, charcoal (pencils and just a piece of charcoal), tiny canvases (3x4 inch and 2x2 inch, the larger of which i've already used, and are now on my bathroom wall looking like neal cassady and allen ginsberg), watercolor pencils, big sketch book, and i think that's it.

tuesday night, we went to adam and amanda's place for dinner, and she gave me this book: drawing with children, by mona brookes, and it is awesome.

in other news, i've figured out why i haven't been posting any pictures. i thought i was just lazy, but it turns out i dont' have the cable for one camera, and the camera that i have a cable for displays the pictures all screwed up. that, and i both found and lost the necessary cable today. so, no pics of all my latest creative endeavors. i might have to pick up a new, cheap camera that i can actually, you know, USE.

smoke break now. note how "quit smoking" is nowhere on the above list. i think i might use these resolutions to enter the february craftster challenge. we'll see.

happy/merry holiday of your choice, everyone!

Jan. 1st, 2008 | 05:01 pm
music: family guy on tv, snoring husband on the couch.

here's how my holiday season has gone, in list-form, because i'm listy like that:

1. i have weekends off at work, so i had the 22nd and 23rd of december off. that was nice.
2. on the 23rd, we had Traditional Chinese Christmas Dinner with the harper family, which has been going on for 49 years (and counting). there were chopsticks and a chinese gift exchange, and that was nice too.
3. i worked (in my jammies) on christmas eve. then came home to have roast beef and yorkshire puddings with the neighbors (who got engaged a few weeks ago!), and an evening of video and board games.
4. christmas day was quiet, and we had Q's mom and nanny over for chicken around suppertime. we got up around 10 and opened presents over coffee and bacon and eggses.
5. had to work boxing day, but at least the mall was pretty quiet.
6. found out my friend jen is pregnant! CONGRATULATIONS, by the way, and there'll be a card in the mail SOON.
7. opened an email this morning, and found out that pregnancy is EPIDEMIC in ontario! my sister (who has 4 teenage kids and a 1 year old) is having TWINS in june!
8. had a pretty quiet new year's eve with all the neighbors - played pictionary, guitar hero, some wii sports, and card games.
9. talked to my parents for almost 2 hours today, and my newly pregnant sister for maybe 10 minutes.
10. i've been making ALL KINDS of stuff lately. i should post pics.... (note to self: email marianne asking about selling on etsy. REALLY should start making use of that shop..)

HAPPY 2008, everyone!!

Writer's Block: What's Worth Reading

Dec. 3rd, 2007 | 05:08 pm

i like reading. and i've been reading a LOT lately. eff answering the "writer's block" question: here's a list of what i've been reading since the wedding.

In No Particular Order:

1. the outlander series, by diana gabaldon. much to my chagrin, this series of romance/historical fiction really grabbed me. i've just started book 5 of 6, and i'm looking forward to her "lord john" series, which is sort of a spin-off.
2. locksley, by nicholas chase, i think. this was NOT the robin hood book i assumed it was. i liked it, but found it hard to remember that it was supposed to be about ROBIN HOOD, and not KING ARTHUR. that, and it was much more history  than legend. not much of it was familiar to me, and that kind of disappointed me.
3. the crystal cave, the hollow hills, and the last enchantment, by mary stewart. this is the series that had me confused while i was reading the robin hood book. this one is about merlin, and the rise of king arthur. apparently, there's a fourth book, about mordred, but i haven't stumbled across that one yet.
4. the continuum concept, by jean liedloff. i'm immersed in "attachment parenting" reading, for no particular reason. it's just a kick i'm on.

and though there's only 4 entries on this list, those 4 entries represent like 9 books. i'm a reading FIEND.

in other sandra-related updates, i'm starting NaNoWriMo tomorrow. my first planned diversion is the making of a laptop bag so that i can take my computer to work with me this month. my second diversion is not really a diversion, but more a writers meeting with fellow red-deer-area nano-ers.

Writer's Block: Happy Halloween!

Oct. 31st, 2007 | 09:10 pm
location: home
mood: beat
music: some annoying commercial on tv.

so i've been thinking for quite some time that i should just hop on the old ell-jay every day or so and post on the "writer's block" topic. at least i'd be posting instead of just lurking.. i miss livejournal. therotund has stolen me away.

how am i celebrating hallowe'en? here you go:

a few weeks ago at work, alicia and i decorated the store, which isn't really so much a store as a cart in the middle of the mall. we built a cardboard castle on top of it and covered it with that crappy plastic "scene setter" wallpaper that wal-mart had for $20.. it looks awesome, especially now that it's all hung with spiderwebs and wee ghosties. maybe there will be pics sometime..

friday night, my neighbor sarah and i threw a costume party at my house. we even sent out invitations. again, maybe pics.. there were about 20 people there, mostly in costume.. i was courtney love, and q was link. you know, from zelda. also in attendance were a dead couple, a witch, wolverine, a sexy pumpkin princess, jason voorhees, some vampire girl thing, the scream guy.. oh, and  a mummy and his slutty sexy kitten girlfriend.. she was also a bitch, though i don't think that was part of her costume.

saturday afternoon, i dressed up as a princess and went to a tea party for my friend's 3-year-old's birthday. that was awesome.. tea was EVERYWHERE, and the snacks were delicious. homemade hummus? mmmmm. and olives, and peppers, and teeny tomatoes, and CHAMPAGNE!! the kids were hilarious after a few glasses of that! (just kidding).

saturday night was a quick trip downtown, and a quicker trip back home to nurse q's upset tummy. he was fine on sunday morning....

when we went to edmonton IN OUR NEW CAR. yes. we got a car on the road. a '92 eagle talon, another car that q can scratch off his "dream cars" list.. whatever.. now that it's passed a safety with only a couple hundred $$ of work needed, he wants to "soup it up. because it's cool." again, whatever.

edmonton was a trip to the ski and snowboard show, where i decided that tobogganing pants from walmart would be just fine - as opposed to buying "snowboarding pants" for like $300. ridiculous.

then we went to ikea, where i bought a set of funnels, a toilet brush, slippers, and a piece of art. pics. later.

when we got home, i went for a sauna.

another sauna on tuesday night, then out with darlene for some indian food. it was awesome.

today, i was supposed to work from 9-3, but alicia had to come in late, so i was there till 4, when the mall hosted their annual "fright night", which is really just a cop-out for lazy parents who want to deprive their kids of all those great canadian trick-or-treating memories by taking them to the mall for nice warm, cozy, safe handouts. cheap, if you ask me. what's a canadian childhood without running around in a snowsuit under your plastic costume, wiping out on the first snow, and taking candy from strangers? bah.
i had to stay till 7, when fright night ended, because (see above) our cart was SWARMED with kids and their parents, and we didn't want to get robbed blind, either of merchandise OR candy.

now, i'm celebrating halloween by grumping to myself every time the doorbell rings, eating a bowl of mushroom soup, and gearing up to watch a movie with my husband, snuggled up on the couch.

how's your holiday?

this is one of my totems. jen knows.

Oct. 18th, 2007 | 04:59 pm

 MAGPIE

Intelligence, Familiars, Occult Knowledge

A Magpie totem helps you use
whatever metaphysical or occult knowledge you have –
no matter how incomplete it may be.
The flip side is that Magpie people can become
jacks of all trades, but masters of none –
dabbling into everything. Be careful to apply your intelligence to the task and take it to its completion.

Magpies have the ability to open up the doorways to the Spirit and Fairy Realms.

Magpies have been familiars to witches and if you have one as a totem,
it might have been your familiar in a past life.
If this is the case, Magpie will be at your side permanently, helping you as it did in the past.
However, again, be careful of using occult power for quick effects
and not taking the time to complete training.
Misuse of magic can have dire consequences.

august 18th, 2007

Aug. 19th, 2007 | 07:53 pm
location: home, sweet home
mood: lazy
music: remnants of our wedding music

so saturday was the big day. about 30 people showed up to celebrate with us. pics are forthcoming - as soon as we get some emailed to us.

really, the only bad thing that happened over the last week was that i kind of broke my right pinky toe on thursday afternoon. so my ballet flats for the wedding were a little on the uncomfortable side, but i think i did ok, and i don't think anyone was any the wiser. until they asked me about the whole "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" thing, and i had nothing blue except for my toe.

actually, that's not strictly true. last night, mid-party after the grown-ups went home, we were playing some low-key drinking games, and i was drinking arbor mist (GAY!) out of my bunnykins mug - my favorite mug, that i've had since before i can remember. and i got up for a smoke break, turned around to grab my sweater, and DROPPED it. it hit the base of the computer chair and BROKE. that's when i burst into tears. i guess it'd been a pretty big day, but the still-functioning part of my brain sent me to bed. yeah - i'll never cry over spilt milk, but spilt wine and a broken favorite mug? TEARS. A-PLENTY. so i gave up and called it a night.

my mom and dad got in to town on thursday afternoon, too, with my nana, and we've had a good time with them. my dad walked me "down the aisle", or really, across the yard, and gave me away, even.

and janelle has been nothing short of amazing since she's been in town. she took me out for drinks on wednesday night, helped me get stuff together for the rehearsal and ceremony, made me eat on saturday morning, let me pop the champagne, and helped me do my hair and get dressed. i think i might have lost my mind if i hadn't had her here.

ok. hopefully i'll be able to post a little more regularly, and i wish i'd been a little more dedicated with posting during the planning process, but there you have it.

now, i'm going to go snuggle with my new husband and watch him play video games. everything is as it should be.

my cat has nicknames

Jul. 25th, 2007 | 11:00 pm
location: home from work
mood: sleepy
music: tv noises

so i saw this post at stuffonmycat.com, and i wanted to post, but i thought youse guys might get more of a kick out of it here, since i, for one, had no desire to scroll through about a thousand pages' worth of strangers' stupid nicknames for their cats.

my cat's name is stella, but i call her stellabelly, stella-ella, kitty, cat-cat, kittykitty, baby kitty, fat cat, muffin, stupid, muffincat, fatty fatty two by four, pretty girl, pretty kitty, chubby baby cat, smelly cat, poor kitty, kitten... there's probably more - i call her something different every time she walks by - but that's all i can think of for now.

she's such a pretty kitty. she's some kind of calico, and she's got really teeny pointy feet, but she weighs about 18 pounds, and she's built like a pitbull. tomorrow, i'll post a pic of my cat in the blanket fort that she made today. no kidding.

what do you call your pets?

attention, all feminists

Jul. 10th, 2007 | 11:39 pm
location: home
music: jon stewart now, thank god

i'm sitting here watching this show on the comedy network, here in canada.. and it's fucking sick.

here's a link, where i think you might be lucky enough to catch a stream.

it's a game in which 2 guys (the Players) compete against each other to pick up women in a club while playing these prescribed games, like "palm reading", where they have to read a chick's palm and "predict a romantic outcome for the two of them".  or game number 2, "let me tell you why you suck," where that's the pickup line the guys have to lead with - ideally, still resulting in getting the chick's number. or game 3, the dance-off, in which contestant number 2 is applauded for lying about his name, not asking the girl for hers, and writing his number on her breast; the jurors in the studio all agreed that he did an awesome job, and also "who wants a chick like that?"

hang on a sec. i got distracted watching again.

they actually say, approvingly, "that's how cold he is. he didn't even ask for her name." can you believe that?

the show is billed as "a professional league for players".

**************************

post commercial break 2: choice quote:

"i wouldn't marry a girl like that. i'd only want her for a few hours"

***************************

omg. i just got to the end of the show. the fucking prize is a "vip night", where the "player" gets a night out, with a limo to take him to the vip room.. the clips of his "prize night" shows a limo full of girls, most of whom are drinking, and at least 2 of whom are making out.

there are SO MANY reasons that i'm fuming a little right now. go. click the link. find this show and watch it, and tell me if i'm RIGHT, or if it's just the cider. you can be sure i'll be going back to this tomorrow, and possibly shooting a venomous (but carefully worded and tactful) email to the comedy network.
